How To Create A Slideshow using Irfanview

Warning: do not experiment with the settings in Irfanview slideshow because they are many, hard to find, and I've not found how to restore them to factory settings except by uninstall and install again.
  1. Install Irfanview (version 4.30 as of 2011/06/26)
  2. Click on the filmstrip (2nd icon in from upper left corner of the Irfanview screen)
  3. Select images to include in the slideshow.
  4. Click on "Save slideshow as EXE/SCR"
  5. Verify default is set to "Create EXE" .
  6. Browse to the desired folder into which to place the file.
  7. Look at "file name" (left from last use) and make sure it is ok.
  8. Click "Create".
  9. Click "OK".

Result:

  1. Start it by clicking on it in Windows Explorer (or in a link we've programmed); stop it by clicking on "Escape".
  2. "Pause" with "control Break", go back one slide by clicking of the left side of the screen, go forward by clicking on the right side of the screen.
  3. It is drive independant (except for the upper left corner where the file path/name are displayed). It will run anywhere Irfanview is installed, and the entire folder can be moved to new location.
  4. I cannot figure out the code in the Irfanview slideshow file (.exe), so I don't see a way to simplify the process by compiling the .exe file in apl.

Conclusions about our 3 digital cameras:

  • All produce satisfactory images when viewed as exported from the camera. These are 4.5mb for the D90, .7mb for the 990, and 1mb for the Casio.
  • We reduce images to about 50kb for e-mail & web use. Images from the D90 are still excellent; those from the 990 are good; those from the Casio are not good.

Open something in your image directory, open the slideshow dialog, check "include subdirectories" if necessary. Close slideshow dialog. Set View to "fit image to window" and size the window as you like. Press Alt+Shift+ T, M, C, and S to make the Toolbar, Menu, Caption (title) bar and Status bar go away. Then press Shift+A. The show begins, sitting in a corner, with only a very thin frame. The window can be resized at will, and if you want to move it just press Alt+Shift+C to get a handle. If all images have the same proportions, it works perfectly. If they vary, there will be blank window space beside or under some, but a neutral background color shouldn't be too disturbing.
